Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Where are the Mantanani Islands?

The Mantanani Islands are located about 40km Northwest from the mainland of Kota Belud, a town 80km North of Kota Kinabalu. The islands are primarily volcanic rock in origin, around which an oceanic island has developed, resulting in two distinct reef formats: one built upon volcanic bedrock and one on the calcareous rubble.

How many islands are part of the Mantanani Islands?

Mantanani Islands consist of 3 islands: Mantanani Besar, Mantanani Kechil and Linggisan. Viva Mantanani is on its own peninsula on Mantanani Besar, which is approximately 3km long and 1.5km at its widest point. The island’s community is made up of about 1000 people who are from the Bajau ethnic group and are predominantly Muslim.

How did the name "Mantanani" come about?

There are many stories explaining this, the most popular being of the founder of the island, a warrior and “ketua kampung” or village head named “Nani” who defended his village from pirates whilst hiding under a cloth/robe or “Manta” in the Bajau Ubian language, during the attacks. Thus the name Mantanani (Nani’s cloth) came about, honoring his bravery.

When Should I Visit?

The weather is beautiful and relatively unchanging year-round, but the best time to visit is late spring to early fall. The reason for this is the sea can get a bit choppy in the months between October and March, so boats travelling to the island may get delayed.

What Happens During Choppy Seas?

Because your safety is our number one concern, tours are cancelled when the weather is non-permissive. We constantly check the weather and inform all guests of situations.

What if Poor Weather Conditions Forces My Trip to Be Cancelled?

Full tour fees will be refunded. We are not liable for any damage or inconvenience incurred.

How Long Is a Diving or Snorkeling Session?

About 45 minutes per session.

I Have My Own Snorkeling/Diving Equipment. Am I Allowed to Bring It?

You sure can! However, the price remains constant.

What Should I Be Aware of While Walking on the Beach?

Rays and Urchins enjoy the habitat that the island provides them, and so may wash up in shallow water or on the sand. The water is very clear and the sand is white, so spotting them does not require extreme effort. But we do recommend being aware of your surroundings, and wearing sandals if concerned.

Are There Mosquitoes?

Because it is a damp, humid environment, there are mosquitoes. If this concerns you, we recommend bringing bug spray. Though generally not a problem, mosquitoes are most active near sunrise and sunset.

Am I Permitted to Bring My Own Alcohol?

You are not permitted to bring outside alcohol onto the island. However, alcohol is sold at the shop on the island (RM10 per can).

What Payments Do You Accept?

MYR in cash or bank transfers
